Practice 8 - Passing, Running with the ball.

The rain poured and practice outside got cancelled. We quickly schedule the practice indoor and only 6 players managed to show. This session worked well with 6 players, but can be used for more players. We had the indoor for 1 hour.

Warm up

10 Minutes - Each player had their own ball. the indoor field had boards around the sides. I had the girls dribbling their ball and playing a wall pass with the outside boards, control the ball and move to another side.

Variation: The girls had a race. who could be the first player to receive 10 wall passes? They had to do a different wall after each attempt.

10 Minutes - Passing

Set up as above with the cones at a distance that will work for your players.

  • At the start the 4 players have a ball, two players are waiting on the cones.

  • 1st player passes the ball then follows her pass. The receiving player passes to the next player who then dribbles the ball to the empty cone and waits.

  • Once all players  (except 2) are at the opposite cone, the exercise starts again.

Focus on:

  • Passing technique (Weight, Accuracy and Timing)

  • First touch - Take the ball to where you are going next.

  • Communication

25 Minutes

Groups of 2 teams stand at opposite ends as shown. Each team has one ball.

  • Players with the ball run with the ball, they then make a diagonal pass to the next group and follow their pass.

  • After a while move the teams to the cone to the far left and get them to repeat the exercise, this will work their opposite foot.

Variation:

  • Same as above but once the passing player passes diagonal, they must touch the red cone and then chase after the player they passed the ball to. If they tag the player or not, the chasing player joins back with their team. If the player is tagged, they still complete their pass, touch the red cone and then chase the player they passed to.

Focus on:

  • Awareness of how the exercise works.......I had to walk through the exercise to show the girls how it was done.

15 Minutes - Scrimmage

Even though we had six players, the session went great. The girls worked so hard and also had fun.
