Practice 5 - Dribbling, turning and Shooting

The last shooting session went well. I thought that I would build on that and show the girls some dribbling and turning exercises.

Warm up

15 Minutes All v All
I marked of a  25 x 25.
  • Each player has a ball. they dribble around the area and whenever they get a chance, they can kick out another players ball.
  • Once a players ball has been kicked out, they retrieve it and join back in the game.

Focus on:

  • Fun
  • Shielding
  • Turning
  • Dribbling away from danger

Variation:

  • Once a players ball has been kicked out, they are out of the game. Who can be the last player in?

15 Minutes - Turns

Using the same area.......

  • I showed the girls 6 turns they can perform in a game

  • 1. Drag Back - As you dribble, with the sole of your foot drag the ball back, keeping close control.

  • 2. Stop turn - Like above but no drag. Dribble the ball, stop it with the sole of your foot, run past the ball and then go the other way. Keeping close the the ball at all times.

  • 3. Inside Hook - Fake to shoot / Pass and cut the ball inside with the inside of your foot

  • 4. Outside Hook - Cut the ball with the outside of the foot. Players standing foot must be ahead of the soccer ball.

  • 5. Cruyff Turn - You will know this one if you have experience at soccer, its just a little hard to explain.

  • 6. Step over and cut back - Another that is difficult to explain in words.

20 Minutes - Turn and Shoot

The players are now put into two teams. Each team stands at the goal. Each player has a ball.
  • The first player on from each team dribbles the ball towards each other.
  • The second player in line is the GK.
  • Once the players get close to each other, they perform one of the turns, and then shoot on the goal they just come from.
  • Once they shoot, they get their ball and go to the back of their line, the player that was the GK, now becomes the shooter, and the player behind them becomes GK.

Focus on:

  • Creativity of your players
  • Shot

Variation:

  • Now I got the players to dribble at each other, move the ball to the right, and then shoot on the opposite goal (After a few attempts, players move to the left.) Have players drop their shoulder, to fake a player out.
20 Minutes -Dribbling and shooting.

Play on two goals, two teams and the Coach has the Soccer balls. (As shown above) Each team stands behind a cone that is set 5 yards away from the goal post. The goals are 25 yards apart.
  • The coach calls out a number, say one. One player from each team sprints around the opposite cone.
  • The coach rolls in a ball, a 1 v 1 is played. Players attack the goal they are facing. No GK.
  • Call out 2, 3 etc.

Focus on:

  • Dribbling / Shooting
  • Defending
  • Decision making (when to shoot / dribble / pass)

Variation:

  • Coach calls out a number. That number + 1 enters the game. So if 2 is called, 3 enter the field. The last person from each team around the cone, becomes the Goal Keeper.
20 Minutes - Scrimmage The girls are improving each week. Thursday we are scrimmaging against the team that really gave us a lesson 2 weeks ago. hopefully we will see some improvement.
