Practice 2

Warm up

10 Minutes
I was still thinking of a Goal Keeper. I had 8 players. I gave 4 players a soccer ball. Players jogged around a 20 x 20 area throwing and catching the soccer ball. Players cannot hold the ball for longer than 3 seconds and cannot throw it back to the person who they received it from. I joined in with them to show them how I wanted the exercise to be performed. This got pretty intense and the girls loved it. This is a great exercise for their decision making, and also seeing who has good hands.

15 Minutes - Passing

In a 10 x 10 area, put in three players as shown above, one soccer ball.
  1. Players pass the ball and move to the empty side of the grid.

Focus on:

  • Timing of pass/run
  • Awareness
  • Keeping eyes on the ball
  • Decision making (do players need to take a touch)
  • Communication

Variation:

  • Play two touch
  • Play one touch

The girls took time to get the hang of the exercise, but eventually improved.

20 Minutes - 6 v 2. Working on Passing under pressure

In a 20 x 20 area, put in four players (2 red players, 2 blue) as shown above, one soccer ball. 4 players are on the outside and play as wall players.
  1. The coach chooses one team in the center to be in possession. That team works with the wall players to keep possession of the ball, this creates a 6 v 2.
  2. When possession is won by the defending team, they now keep possession with the help of the wall players.
  3. Wall players cannot enter the playing area. Wall players can pass to other wall players.
  4. Change middle players over.

Focus on:

  • Transition
  • Awareness / decision making
  • Passing.
  • Space
  • Communication
My ideas for using this exercise were to allow the players to not group together like last week. A lot of passing went on between wall players. the players in the center did not see much of the ball. We had 15 minutes to scrimmage.
Again the group worked so hard. We all know it will take a lot of time and patience.
