Practice 17 - Dribbling / Faking

I want to work on individual skills and ball control. The exercises I have been showing the girls have not been used I game situations. I want to get them comfortable using the skills. I have 10 players for this practice.

Fun Game, Tail Tag - 15 Min (with stretching after.)
Mark out a 20 x 20 area. Myself and an Assistant coach joined in the game. Split the teams into 3 Groups of 4. Assign a different colored pinnie to each team. Players put the pinnie down the back of their shorts and make a tail. It must be hanging out so players can grab it.
  • Game 1 = All v All. Players spread ouot in the area. They attempt to grab a 'tail' from any other player.
  • Once a player grabs a pinnie, they throw it out of the area. The player who has lost the pinnie, waits outside the area and puts their pinnie back as a tail, then rejoins the game.
  • Game 2 - Now they play in teams. They can grab any pinnie as long as it is not a player from their team.
  • Which team wins?
  • Game 3 - All v All. Once your pinnie is grabbed you are out. Who will be the last player in?

Focus on:

Fun

Being Positive (You may find that players run away a lot. Encourage them to face to grab the pinnie from the player who is chasing them.)

Dribbling - 20 Min  - The players will be performing turns and tricks. I will be showing them the scissors again, and also teaching them the 'drag back'

Have cones spread out in a 30 x 30 area. Each player has a ball. They perform the above moves, starting with the top one:
  1. Player dribbles to one side of the cone, drags the ball back and moves away on the opposite side.
  2. Player dribbles to the cone, fakes to go one way, then moves the ball the other with the outside of her foot. So, if she fakes and lunges to her left, she will move the ball with the outside of her right foot.
  3. Player dribbles to one side of the cone and cuts the ball back to move round the opposite side of the cone.
  4. Player dribbles to the cone, drags the ball back and moves to another cone.

Focus on:

  • Technique
  • Quality
  • Once the exercise is performed, players should move away quickly.
  • Close control.

Dribbling / Faking under pressure - 15 Min

Set up two groups of 5 players. Set up as shown above. Make two goals for players to dribble through. have two defenders at the goals.

1 v 1 is played.

  • First player dribbles and watches were the defender is moving.
  • The defender tries to protect both goals and attempts to tackle the attacker.
  • The attacker has to make a decision. Do they dribble ahead or fake to move to the other goal?
  • Switch the defenders / Attackers.
Dribbling / Faking / Shooting - 20 Min

The players are now put into two teams. Each team stands at the goal. Each player has a ball.
  • The first player on from each team dribbles the ball towards each other.
  • The second player in line is the GK.
  • Once the players get close to each other, they perform one of the turns, and then shoot on the goal they just come from.
  • Once they shoot, they get their ball and go to the back of their line, the player that was the GK, now becomes the shooter, and the player behind them becomes GK.

Focus on:

  • Creativity of your players
  • Shot

Variation:

  • Now I got the players to dribble at each other, move the ball to the right, and then shoot on the opposite goal (After a few attempts, players move to the left.) Have players drop their shoulder, to fake a player out.
