  YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
........a Coaches Diary of how he is trying to progress his U9 Girls team.

23rd April 2006 – The Club has started preparation for the U9 travel team. We are running 6 soccer clinics for U9 players. This gives the players a chance to come to the clinics and develop their soccer skills, it also gives me a chance to spot players with potential.

June 8th – June 9th 2006 – Try – Outs.

The Coaching clinics have now finished. The clinics have been a huge success. I have already chosen a number of players for the new team. Now we have two try outs to see if we can add more players to the team. I had 17 players trying out for a squad of 11 / 12 players. I chose 10 players and left 2 slots open just in case that ’Special Player’ came along. The try outs were mostly attended by the girls off the clinics. A number of players turn down the request to join the team, but I chose 10 girls that had a great work ethic and what I thought had potential.

Summary of the Season.

Overall the season has been very satisfying. We didn't finish the season very well and we seemed to hit a stop sign with regards to learning. We have to look back though on the first time we ever played a game. Look how far we have come from that first scrimmage. We have improved so much. This is a process of gradual learning and we have to be patient.

We will now rest over the winter and play indoor in January. I want the girls to take a break from Coaching. If they want to practice, they should also do it at home.

Our philosophy as a team is one thing I always tell the girls before practice and games. I explain what I want them to do, and then ask them, "what is the most important thing that we do?" The girls always reply "HAVE FUN"

Can't wait for spring!!

INDOOR - At the start of 2007 we played Indoor. My plan of having girls practice themselves worked on 50% of the team. You could see who had been practicing and who had not. This is so important in their development. You must encourage the players to practice away from the Coach. This enables them to 'THINK FOR THEMSELVES'.

we finished the indoor season: W 4 L 1 T 1 and we reached the championship game. We played the team that had already had a victory over us in the regular indoor. We lost the championship game 5-2. The girls did great. I was so proud of them.

This team has improved so much. There is so much improvement to be achieved at this age. With the right Coaching and attitude, you can achieve wonderful things with young athletes.
