Organise the players into groups of seven, and play 5 v 2 keep away.

Play in a 15 x 15 yard area.

Stretch before, during and after the exercise.

This is the most common warm up, but it can still be coached.

Focus on:
  • Coach the two defenders
  • Make sure they defend as a pair. The closest defender applies the pressure, the second provides support.
  • Try not to get split by a pass.
  • The nearest defender forces the pass in one direction, this shows the other defender where to provide the cover.
  • Outside players offer support when the ball is traveling.
  • Communication
Variations:
  • Play two touch
  • Before starting, defenders perform 5 knees to chest.
  • For developing outside players, play one touch.
