Shadow Play.

This is an excellent way to work on different attacking moves. The problem you may have is getting your players to play realistic football. You have to have a group of players who have good attitude and who want to learn. If you get the response from your players then this exercise is of great importance.

Set up as shown above: Players 1 to 6 V Goalkeeper. Players 1 & 2 are central midfielders, 3 & 4 strikers, 5 & 6 wide players. Two goals are marked at the centreline, this is for the GK to distribute the ball, either kick or throw. The coach has plenty of footballs available.

  1. Make sure that the proper techniques are used and play is realistic.
  2. The coach demonstrates passing moves that can be performed, ie Wall passes, overlaps, 3rd man running, takeovers.
  3. Encourage your players to try to see the picture of what is happening and, when not in possession of the ball, the player can be looking what pass to make when they receive the ball.

Focus on:

  • Attitude
  • Movement
  • Awareness
  • Communication
  • Passing

Variation:

  • Start the attack from different areas
  • Add some defenders, and coach their positions.
