Possession and switch

Mark out two squares 20 x 10 yards with a 5 yard channel splitting the squares, as shown above. Six players in each team with two players on the outer of the 5 yard zone.
  1. The coach passes the ball into the oranges. Once a player from orange touches the ball, the two darks on the outside go and retrieve the ball. The object of the exercise is for the team in possession to try and pass the ball into the next group.
  2. Once the ball is won the two darks go back to the outer 5 yard zone and the coach passes a ball into the dark players, the two oranges go in to get the ball.
  3. Change the defenders.
Focus on:
  • Awareness.
  • First touch.
  • Movement.
  • Technique.
  • Communication.
Variation:
  • The teams cannot pass to the next square until they have completed 5 or more passes.
  • Play two touch.
  • Put the chasers in the middle. The ball has to be passed to the next group without the chasers stopping it.
